Who we are

The Nafplio Institute is an independent international research institute focused on geopolitics, strategy, security, economics, and international affairs. The Institute was established to provide a space for serious analysis grounded in geography, history, and institutional realities rather than short-term policy cycles or media narratives.

Our work is shaped by Greece’s position at the intersection of Europe, the Mediterranean, and global seaborne trade. We approach strategy not as an abstract exercise, but as a practical response to constraints imposed by geography, resources, and institutions.

The Institute engages with students, early-career researchers, and practitioners who are interested in contributing thoughtful, well-argued work. We prioritise clarity, coherence, and seriousness of intent over volume or visibility. Our aim is to support long-term intellectual development rather than rapid commentary.

Our Approach

  • We provide a platform for students, early-career researchers, and subject matter experts to contribute to policy discussions.

  • We produce analysis and commentary on Greek and Mediterranean defence policy, Mediterranean security, maritime strategy, and regional geopolitics. Our work aims to elevate informed debate on Greece’s strategic interests.

  • Situated in Greece, the Nafplio Institute serves as a forum for dialogue among like-minded individuals from across the Mediterranean and allied states, focused on strategic, security, and maritime issues.

  • Nafplio Institute is an independent non-profit research organisation focused on Greek defence policy, maritime security, and strategic and economic issues in the Mediterranean. We provide rigorous analysis and create opportunities for emerging researchers to contribute to important policy debates.

  • Greece plays a critical role in NATO, EU security, and Eastern Mediterranean stability—issues that matter to international audiences. Publishing in English ensures our research reaches policymakers, defence professionals, and analysts beyond Greece’s borders. We welcome contributions in English, Greek, Italian, and French.

  • We publish work from students, early-career researchers, subject matter experts, and our staff. We’re building a network of contributors across Greece and the Greek diaspora who bring rigorous analysis to economic, maritime, and security and defence issues.

  • We welcome pitches and submissions from researchers interested in Greek defence, maritime, and strategic policy. Contact us via the footer or Contact page with your proposal or draft. We’re particularly interested in working with Greek university students and recent graduates.

  • We aim for analytical rigour and objectivity rather than advocacy. Our goal is to inform with well-researched analysis, not to push a particular political agenda.
